Summary

This project will raise matching funds to build an Eco-friendly ablution block at Katombora Reformatory School in rural Zambia for 170 teens who are in conflict with the law. The ablution block will be independent in its water and power supply and will include 3 toilet cubicles, 3 urinals, 4 sinks, 4 shower cubicles, store room, service duct, 4400 liter water tank, borehole, solar powered water pump, and septic tank. This project will help restore dignity and self-worth to these forgotten teens.

Challenge

Currently, Katombora Reformatory School has one aging ablution (toilet/shower) block for 170 teens living at the School. This means that there is only one toilet per every 42 teens. The situation has now become dire due to lack of water supply to the ablution block. This has forced the teens to resort to open defecation leading to outbreaks of water borne diseases as a result. Lack of functioning showers leads teens to bathe in the nearby river which has dangerous currents and wildlife.

Solution

The project will ensure that all teens living at the School have access to a functioning ablution block with additional toilets and showers and it’s own solar-powered water supply and rainwater collection system. This will reduce the toilet-to-child ratio and improve personal hygine practices among the teens. The extra ablution block will also reduce the risks to the teens from water borne diseases and river bathing. The construction will be carried out by our NGO partner Build It International.

Long-Term Impact

As part of the EU funded RISE AGAIN project, the ablution block will improve sanitary conditions leading to better health and well being of 170 young people. Further, the project will contribute to sustainable use of water as it will promote rain water harvesting and reduce the burden on the current water supply system. Due to the current water supply challenges in Zambia, the use of solar energy will help to reduce dependency on erratic power supply to the facility.
